Big Satan

Big Satan
Big Satan

Big Satan is a trio led by American saxophonist Tim Berne and featuring the amazing French guitarist Marc Ducret and American drummer Tom Rainey. Their music thrives in the art of collision – the collision between composition and improvisation, between expectation and surprise, between gray matter and guts. Next to Big Satan, metal bands seem safe and most improv groups humourless. In other words, if jazz were an amusement park, the music of Berne, Ducret & Rainey would be the thrill ride that the big boys and girls love to take...

The group released its first album, I Think They Liked It, Honey, in 1997, described by Allmusic as "a truly mesmerizing set that rings with ominous overtones and intricately constructed fabrics of sound"

Their style of music is out-jazz or avant garde. Adopting aspects of many of previous out-jazz originators like Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, etc, Big Satan's sound is aggressive but with a sense of humor.
